What you need to know about your heart

Simply put, your heart is the most important part of your body.  It is what makes your body tick. It is what makes your body work. It is what pumps blood and oxygen to every part of your body.  If oxygen does not circulate and reach every area of your body, then that part will deteriorate.

When you were in school, some of us many, many years ago, did you ever hear that your heart was about the size of your fist?   Well, that is what we heard growing up and that is what we hear today.  So, let’s check it out.  Make a fist and put it in the middle of your chest, then slide your fist just a little towards your left arm.  You should be right over your heart. Imagine your fist as your heart doing all the work to keep your body in motion and functioning properly. Your heart has the job of moving blood throughout your body. It pumps blood from your heart to your brain, very important for your thinking, talking, mental status, and moving your arms and legs.  Your heart pumps blood from your heart to your toes and fingertips, so important for maintaining healthy blood flow for adequate circulation. Let’s not forget that your heart pumps blood from your heart to your gallbladder, liver, kidneys, pancreas, bladder, and even your stomach and intestines.  For something so little, it has so much to do.

The number one fact is that, when oxygenated blood is moving through the chambers of your heart, it is pumping blood and oxygen to every part of your body.  Your heart needs to be in good shape to do the job it was created to do.  Taking care of it is essential to life.  Taking care of it is essential to living a healthy lifestyle.  To live a heart-healthy lifestyle, you need to develop healthy habits that support a healthy heart.
